Cataract Surgery

Improving Vision Quality and Life Quality

Blindness is a major cause in Bangladesh due to cataracts, especially among the poorest and most disadvantaged. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cataracts account for more than 50% of all blindness in the world. The high prevalence of blindness in Bangladesh is due to poverty, inadequate nutrition, and lack of healthcare access. Step to Humanity Association launched a limited resource initiative to address this problem by offering free cataract surgery to the most vulnerable people in Gazipur, Bangladesh.

The project began in February 2020. It provided 25 cataract surgeries for those most in need. It also served at least 150 people for their preliminary eye exam and basic treatment. The project’s objective was to reduce poverty and restore vision to people who can’t afford surgery due to financial hardship.

A dedicated team of nurses, doctors and support staff worked together to create a seamless experience for patients. The team performed necessary surgery in a local clinic and screened for cataracts. To ensure a quick recovery, patients also received post-operative treatment.

Cataract Surgery Project was completely funded by donations from individuals. This made the project even more important as it did not receive any funding from the government. To continue offering free cataract surgery to those in need, the project relied on donations.

It is amazing how cataract surgery can impact a patient’s daily life. Many of the patients who underwent cataract surgery were able to see clearly again and resume their daily activities. They no longer felt dependent on others or like a burden on their loved ones. Families of patients who have had their vision restored can also benefit from it. They no longer have the responsibility of caring for their visually impaired loved one.

The project provided free cataract surgery and raised awareness about the importance of eye health. The project aims to prevent the development of cataracts and blindness by encouraging people to seek treatment as soon as possible.

The Cataract Surgery Project in Bangladesh made a significant impact providing free cataract surgery to those who couldn’t afford it. This project was designed to decrease poverty by providing free cataract surgeries to people who most need them, improving their quality life and giving them the opportunity to make a difference in their communities and families. This project is a great example of how individuals can work together to improve the lives of people who are most in need.
