One remarkable aspect of The Goat Rearing and Breeding Project of International Canadian Charity the Step to Humanity Association(STHA) in Bangladesh is how a small initiative has yielded significant achievements. With the distribution of just 100 Black Bengal Female Goats to impoverished women in the Kushtia District, the project has already made a substantial impact on the lives of the beneficiaries. Within a short span of time, most of the goats have successfully bred, resulting in the birth of multiple kids. This achievement not only demonstrates the viability of the project but also showcases how a modest investment in livestock resources can lead to substantial improvements in income generation and livelihoods. The project’s ability to create tangible outcomes with limited resources is a testament to its effectiveness and the dedication of all those involved. The Goat Rearing and Breeding Project is a transformative initiative that aims to provide sustainable livelihoods to impoverished women in Bangladesh, empowering them to overcome poverty permanently. Step to Humanity, the project’s implementing organization, initiated this venture in early 2022 by distributing 100 Black Bengal Female Goats to 100 women in the Kushtia District of Bangladesh. The project is currently being monitored by Joint Secretary of STHA Dr. Ekram-Ul Azim, the project leader, and another 50 goats are being distributed in the local community. The Black Bengal Goat, renowned as one of the most esteemed breeds globally, is native to the Kushtia District. This breed is known for its meat production, with adult goats weighing between 20-30 kg. Black Bengal Goats mature early, and a female can give birth to 2-4 kids annually. Their ability to consume a diverse range of food makes them easy to rear. Under this project, beneficiaries receive the goats free of cost, with the expectation that they refrain from selling the mother goat. Instead, they are encouraged to sell the offspring to support their livelihoods. Additionally, beneficiaries have the option to donate one goat to a poor relative or neighbor after several breeding cycles, allowing them to give back to their community when they are financially stable. As the project enters its second year, most of the goats have already bred 1-2 times, resulting in 1-3 kids in each breeding cycle. The beneficiaries have been able to experience the positive impact of this project, thanks to the generosity of our donors. Step to Humanity remains committed to continuing this sustainable initiative with the support of donors, ensuring its longevity for years to come. Furthermore, the organization aims to replicate this successful model in other districts of Bangladesh and in other developing countries. The Goat Rearing and Breeding Project in Bangladesh stands as a beacon of hope, empowering impoverished women through sustainable livelihoods. By providing Black Bengal Goats and encouraging responsible breeding and sharing, the project not only offers economic opportunities but also strengthens community bonds. The positive outcomes observed in the early years of the project demonstrate its potential for long-term impact. Step to Humanity remains dedicated to expanding, this initiative, ensuring that more women in Bangladesh and beyond can break free from the cycle of poverty and achieve a brighter future.
